Trish Tillman

Trish Tillman is a New York City based visual artist and writer. Influenced by the DIY music and activist scene of Washington, DC where Tillman grew up, her sculptures combine an edgy ethos with a refined sophistication in her use of materials like hand printed leather, chrome hardware, horsehair and zippers. Her meticulously stitched and stretched surfaces evoke a sleek, machine-like quality despite being handmade. In her work, she explores themes of identity, gender, and societal grooming, inviting viewers to question their perceptions of innocence, eroticism, and cultural ideals. Her interplay of industrial textures with more whimsical or disturbing imagery often results in works that are as unsettling as they are playful.

Tillman received an MFA from School of Visual Arts in Fine Art. Her work has been featured in solo exhibitions at Asya Geisberg Gallery, NYC; Andrew Rafacz, Chicago, IL; VisArts, Richmond, VA; and Civilian Projects, Washington, DC. Group exhibitions include COUNTY, Palm Beach, FL; Shelter, NYC; Emerson Dorsch Gallery, Miami, FL; HILDE, Los Angeles, CA; Tiger Strikes Asteroid, Philadelphia, PA; Delaware Contemporary, Wilmington, DE; Museum of Contemporary Art Arlington, VA; Slag Gallery, NYC; and Jawahar Kala Kendra, Jaipur, RJ, India.

Tillman is a recipient of a Joan Mitchell Foundation Grant, the Hopper Prize, and an UNTITLED Fountainhead Residency Fellowship. She has been in several art fairs, such as Future Fair, UNTITLED, SPRING/BREAK and NADA. Her work has been reviewed in ARTFORUM, Sculpture Magazine, Vogue, ArtFCity, Juxtapose and Artsy Magazine, among others. Tillman has been a professor at Monmouth University, George Washington University, the Corcoran School of Art, and Rutgers University. She is currently a resident artist at the Mildred Thompson Legacy Project in Atlanta and has an upcoming project at the South Street Seaport in New York City.
